2017 U.S. Open Championship - Marshal Opportunity

Hello Presidents of the MCPLA Clubs:

I am contacting you as you presently sit as the President of your respective golf clubs.  As the President of the Brown Deer Men's club, I have been contacted by the USGA to coordinate an effort to recruit 65 members to volunteer for the 2017 U.S. Open Championship at Erin Hills.  This exciting tournament will be played from June 12-18, 2017.

I am positive that many of your club members will jump at the opportunity to marshal during this fun event and for that reason I am attaching a Marshal Volunteer Application for their use.  The application is self explanatory but I know members will have some questions.  Three of those might be:  Why apply so early,  do I have to pay now, and can woman apply. The answer to number one is that the USGA needs 4500 volunteers to make the Open a success.  In order to get that many, the effort to recruit must start now.  Second answer, no, do not send in your money until you are invoiced by the USGA, and lastly, by all means, ladies are welcome to apply to marshal.  The 175.00 will be collected later and then you will receive two shirts, a jacket, head gear, and lunch voucher for the day you marshal.  Along with all that, you will be given a credential good for all seven days.  Even if you are not scheduled to work, you can walk the course at your leisure.

I am asking that you send out an email to your club now along with a copy of the application to get the ball rolling, no pun intended.  The applications should be sent to Bob Cohn, 2340 W Dickinson Ct., Mequon, Wi 53092.  If you or any member should have a question, have them contact me either by email at: cookiecohn@gmail.com or call me at 262 512 2020.  If I don't know the answer I assure you I will get one for your member.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in getting this out as soon as possible.

On behalf of your MCPLA board, I hope everyone has a GREAT HOLIDAY SEASON!!!!!!

2015 Season Ending Event - 1 Man Scramble: Pairings, Payouts, Etc...

Currie Men,
I’m sending this out to the entire club membership in case anyone who’s not golfing would like to join us after the event in the club house for the end of season business such as collecting your gift cards (if that’s how you decided to receive payment), voting on 2016 officers, awarding of ‘Player of the Year’, etc…

The golf starts at 8am and is s shotgun start so I’d like to think we’d be off the course and in the club house by the noon hour.

Here’s some facts about the golf portion of this day: Season Ending Event: 1-Man Scramble
  • SHOTGUN START: This event will begin at 8:00am from a variety of tee boxes. Please note your starting position, which is found in the ‘Hole’ column of the image below.
  • Format: One-Man Scramble - Each player gets two extra shots per hole but must pick up at bogie. Can only use one extra shot per shot (example; cannot take three shots at birdie putt if on par 4 green in regulation without using any extra shots). If extra shot is taken then you can chose the better of the two shots to hit your next ball from (aka SCRAMBLE)
  • Recommended strategy: Hit tee-ball in fairway! If you miss the fairway and it is in the trees, walk to your ball and hit a second shot (save your scramble shots) - get the second shot close to the green or back into play! Use your first scramble shot (one of the two extra shots) to hit your second or third shot close to the pin, Use your second scramble shot (two of the two extra shots) on taking two putts at making par or birdie, Key is to attempt to hit fairway on your tee shot or at least give yourself a shot at hitting it near the green.
  • Flights: There will be three flights (Championship, A and B) defined in the following manner.
    • Championship Flight (3.8 index to 8.4): 13 Players
    • A Flight (8.7 index to 11.7): 13 Players
    • B Flight (12.3 index to 23.9): 14 Players
  • Payouts: We'll pay the top three spots in each flight; $35, $25 and $20. This will be paid out immediately following the event.
  • Score Cards: Score cards will be provided, please hand the cards in to Scott Walecki or Jeff Camosy after completing your round. This is a flighted GROSS event so you don't have to worry about any handicaps, just card your gross score.
  • Skins: No skins game will be offered since it does not make sense in this format.

Mascoutin Event (9/26): At Risk of CANCELLATION due to LOW REGISTRANTS!

Currie Men,
If you intend to register for the 9/26 event at Mascoutin we’d like to see you register without delay since we only have 6 people registered at the moment. It’s a nice course up near Oshkosh and if we don’t get around 16 players we’ll likely make a decision to abandon the event. So SIGN UP!

Also, we currently have 14 golfers signed up for the 9/27 event at Mee-Kwon . We have eight tee times and they were gracious to squeeze us in after we abandoned Whispering Springs due to their aeration schedule so we’d like to see a decent number there as well.

History of the Currie Cup (reprint from 2012)

This is a reprint from 08/2012..........

Those of you unfamiliar with the history of the Currie Cup…

In 2008, Mike O’Neil had a great idea to creating an event for Currie Park Men’s Golf Club.  It was the year of the Ryder Cup with Paul Azinger and Nick Faldo as Captains playing at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.  Mike prompted the event to the club while providing a format to keep all handicap abilities involved in the event.   Like the Ryder Cup, it was drawn up to have Morning foursomes and Afternoon fourball.  Unfortunately, Mike was unable to participate in the event.  The first Currie Cup in 2008 was at Evergreen Golf Course in Elkhorn, Wisconsin where only 16 members played in the event.   It was Team Nicklaus edging out Tem Hogan 8 ½ to 7 ½ in the first battle of Captain Jardanowski and Captain Webb.

In 2009, again Mike O’Neil drummed up the event.   The event took place at Brighton Dale Golf Course in Racine County.  Unfortunately, Mike was unable to participate.   It was the year of golf cart incident, where tree met golf cart head-on.   Fortunately, no one was hurt badly.   24 members played in the event in a lopsided Team Nicklaus 14 ½ to Team Snead 9 ½ where Jardanowski was nominated for Captain of the Year.

In 2010 another Ryder Cup year, the word was out that this event was a blast to participate in playing.  The event Directed by Jardanowski and backed by Webb and O’Neil was a unique event added and opened to other members of the club.   Promoting the event as fun, competitive, and feeling like you were playing at the Ryder Cup was successful in bringing 32 members to play at Brighton Dale Golf Course in Racine County.   After a third Team name for Captain Webb, Team Mickelson Machine made a late surge during the afternoon rounds to take a 16.5 to 15.5 win over Team Nicklaus.

In 2011, Mike O’Neil was finally able to participate in the event he created in 2008.  Oh, Mike took some heat for having a great idea, yet not able to participate in the event.  This was his first year for him in the event.  After the event Mike was quoted, “This felt like a real Ryder Cup, I really enjoyed playing and even felt a little nervous during the matches”.   The venue was moved north to Kettle Hills Golf Course, bordering property lines with the Gitter plantation.  Yes, PGA Professional Eric Gitter has property bordering a golf course.  It was the first year the event allowed a Professional to play.   Mike was part to the winning team where Team Mickelson Machine just crushed Team Nicklaus.   Even after the crushing defeat, Captain Jardanowski was quoted, “It’s all about heart!”.   It had nothing to do with a late block buster trade for the Brandts.   The speech provided to Team Nicklaus was crushing.   PGA Professional Eric Gitter before the matches, “Try hard, if we lose who cares.  Sound Good?  Let’s go hit some balls!”

This brings us to 2012, another Ryder Cup year.  The Ryder Cup being played in nearby Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois (Are you going?).  Tom Jardanowski decides to step down from Director and Captain.   Jardo will remain in charge of the famous putting contest.   We want to thank you Jardo for all the hard work over the past 4 years.  Mike Kessler has taken the duties of Director and Ken Collins has relieved Tom as a rookie Captain for the challenging team against savvy veteran Captain Dan Webb.

The 2012 Currie Cup has been brought to “the Battle at the National” this year.  The battle is providing some additional history with the team names.  Lawson Airliners, the first commercial flight into Milwaukee landed on the property of Currie Park.  Dickinson Line was the first airmail flight from Milwaukee to Chicago.  The Battle is schedule for September 2, 2012 with 40 members playing this year.

CURRIE CUP: Please Register & Supply Your Shirt Size! Registration DEADLINE is TOMORROW (8/7) at 11pm!

Currie Men,
Club Secretary, Bill Zolandz, will be collecting the Currie Cup shirt sizes so please send your shirt size to him.

We currently only have 18 golfers signed up for the 9/6 CURRIE CUP event and the registration deadline is tomorrow! (8/7 at 11pm). The reason this deadline is so far in advance of the event is because two captains typically pick their teams in the club house after the Saturday round of the Club Championship and we also need to get shirts ordered! Most members look forward to this event.
  • This is a Ryder Cup STYLE event where we form two teams, get two different colored shirts and play 36 holes of golf at Currie Park.
  • The format changes every 9 holes, there is a putting contest for cash and it’s an overall fun day.
  • Cost, actual formats and other details will be forthcoming….
Therefore, please get out there and REGISTER NOW! Currie Cup Registration Page

Captain JARDO and COLLINS will be looking forward to seeing who their pool of golfers will be to choose from.

Club Secretary, Bill Zolandz, will be collecting the Currie Cup shirt sizes so please send your shirt size to him.
